General Information 2009 - 2010 Board of Directors Monthly Summary of Board Minutes Jim Rodger (Argyle), Jim retired in 2001 following a twenty five year career in health services at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. At HSC, Jim held a variety of roles include Director, Corporate Affairs & Communications, Corporate Secretary & Assistant to the President and Assistant to the Vice President, Patient Care. Jim was a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Klinic Community Health Centre in Winnipeg from 2002 to 2007and is Sergeant-at-Arms of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #222 in Argyle. For more than twenty years, Jim has lent his support to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind's Talking Books program as a narrator. Jim was appointed to the role of Board Chair for a two year term ending March 31, 2011. Muriel Alexander (St. Martin), Muriel has spent over fifty years as a volunteer serving community organizations within the Interlake region and beyond and is currently the President of the Gypsumville Art Club and a volunteer with the Junior Art Club. Her volunteering legacy began with the 4 H Club of Ontario in 1951. Muriel's professional background includes extensive experience in support services and food services within the health care setting as well as serving on the committee to establish the Northern Interlake Handi-Van for the Ashern / Gypsumville areas. Muriel was a member of the North West District Health Advisory Council and has previously served as a member of the RHA Board from 2001 to 2007. A mother of two, grandmother of five and great-grandmother of nine, Muriel was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2008. Susan Anderson (St. Martin), Susan is currently serving as a Teaching Aide at Gypsumville School. Previous to that, she was the owner of the Country Town'n Dollar Store and Canada Post outlet in Oakbank, MB. An active volunteer, Susan spent fifteen years serving the Springfield Minor Hockey Association, with her last four years as President. She has also been involved as a Sunday School Teacher at Grace Lutheran Church for ten years and was a Unit Leader with Oakbank Brownies and Girl Guides. Susan was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2007. Dave Cain (Gimli), Dave has spent the last thirty-three years as the Regional Manager, Interlake Region for the Province of Manitoba Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism and Sport in Gimli. Prior to that, he served as Recreation Director in The Pas, MB and Thunder Bay, Ontario. Dave has been a member of the Kinsmen Club of Gimli since 1979 and has held all Executive Positions including the role of Club President. He has also been actively involved with other organizations such as the Canadian Diabetes Association, Gimli Minor Hockey Association and the Gimli Wolves Senior Hockey Team. Dave has received the distinction of being awarded a Life Membership to the Kinsmen Club of Gimli and received the Kinsmen of the Year award. He has also received the Province of Manitoba's Community Service Award amongst other awards and honours. Dave was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2007. Kim Canvin (Selkirk), Kim has spent the past nine years as the Regional Director, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Interlake Region in Selkirk. CMHA is a nation wide charitable organization that promotes the mental health of all and supports the resiliency and recovery of people experiencing mental illness. CMHA Interlake provides supported housing services to individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, as well as housing resource development. Prior to this, she was a nurse in acute psychiatry at St. Boniface General Hospital from 1981 to 2000. As well, she was a Team Leader for the Crisis Stabilization Unit / Mobile Crisis Team from 1996 to 2002. Kim also spent three years as a pharmaceutical research nurse from 1996 to 1999. For the past 17 years, she has been an active volunteer in a variety of school and community endeavors. Kim was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2007. John Cochrane (Ashern), John is retired after fourteen years as an Educational Assistant with the Lakeshore School Division. A thirty year resident of Ashern, he has served on numerous community boards including the Ashern Day Care, Lakeshore Women's Resource Centre and as an executive member of CUPE Local 3206. His professional teaching career has included various schools within Manitoba as well as a two year stint in Gambia, West Africa at a Teacher's College. John currently volunteers with the Ashern Pioneer Museum, playing the role of railroad man A.S. Hern, for whom Ashern is named, serves on the Board of his church as Treasurer and sings in the choir. John is married to Linda Fletcher (former Board member 2001 - 2004) and they have two children. John was re-appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2007. Murray Craddock (Riverton), Murray currently serves as a member of the Manitoba Hazardous Waste Corporation, a role he has held for the past seven years. He retired in 2006 from the Canadian Union of Public Employees where he served twenty-three years as a Representative involved with health care and day care workers in the areas of collective bargaining and administration. Prior to that, Murray was a Health Care Aide at Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. He has served as a Board Member with Manitoba Blue Cross, the Manitoba Disabilities Society and the United Way of Winnipeg. Murray volunteers with the Riverton Heritage and Transportation Museum and is a member of the Riverton Elks. Murray was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2009. Denis Fitzpatrick (Selkirk), Denis retired from Selkirk & District General Hospital Diagnostic Services Department as the Chief Laboratory Technologist and Microbiology Resource Technologist in 2005, following a twenty-six year career within the Interlake region. Previous to that, Denis had worked at Cadham Provincial Lab (1976-79), Carman Lab & X-Ray (1973-76) and for the Province of Manitoba / Manitoba Health Services Commission (1971-72). Denis served as the Chair of the Pension Benefits Committee for MGEU from 1989 to 2005 and was a member of the International Foundation of Employee Benefits for sixteen years. In 2006, Denis received a Honourary Life Membership in the Manitoba Government Employees Union. He currently volunteers with the Vintage Locomotive Society of Manitoba and is a founding member of the Selkirk Model Railroad Association. Denis has been a member of the transit committee for the City of Selkirk since 2006 and is also a Commission member of the Manitoba Pension Commission. Denis was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2008. Faye Goranson (Lundar), always interested in community betterment, Faye taught school, spent many years writing a news column in the Stonewall Argus, worked as a reporter/photographer for the Interlake Spectator, and most recently as Publisher of the "Time Out ... for local news" coffee newsletter from 1999 to 2006. She also served as Manitoba Editor for the Canadian Lutheran Magazine from 1994 to 1997. Faye has been an active volunteer in support of numerous community pursuits including the Lakeshore Women's Resource Centre, the North Interlake Festival of the Arts and served as Chair of the Steering Committee to develop a mental health support centre in Lundar. She was also a founding member of the North West District Health Advisory Council. Faye received a 2006 Community Service Award from the R.M. of Eriksdale and was named as "Woman of the Year" in 1997 by the Lakeshore Women's Resource Centre. Faye was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2009. Grace Hodgson (Arborg), Grace retired in 2000, following a twenty-six year career with the CIBC. During her career, she held various roles within the bank from teller to manager and responsibilities included areas such as lending, investment advice, will and estate planning. In 1997, she was the recipient of the CIBC Achiever Award presented for commitment to performance excellence, customer service and for being a team player. Grace has been a volunteer with various organizations throughout her adult life from hockey mom to volunteer ambulance attendant. As well, she is a past member of the local chamber of commerce, the Arborg & District Health Auxiliary Inc. and the Seniors Resource Council where she served on the Executive. Since her retirement, Grace has remained active with the CIBC Walk for a Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Within the community, Grace volunteers with the congregate meal program, serves as a Peer Leader with the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA) and is on the local Youth Justice Committee. Grace was re-appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2009. Debra Jenkins (Selkirk), Debra has worked with the Manitoba Nurses Union for the past twenty-two years and currently serves as a Labour Relations Officer. Prior to that, Debra held nursing positions at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and in Brooks, Alberta. For the past three years, she has been a member of the Board for the Twice Over Inc. (second hand store) in Selkirk as well as being a Board member and Chair of Nova House Women's Shelter since 1997. Debra was a member of the Health Sciences Centre Board from 1986 to 1995 and began her volunteer activities in the 70's as a Candy Striper at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. Debra was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2008. Robert R. McLean (Fairford), President, Chief Executive Officer, and managing a newly founded humanitarian/advocacy mission with a National Vision and Plan designed to alleviate the sufferings of the First Nation people in Canada. Robert served from 1971 to 1997 with Fairford First Nations in various positions including Band Manager, Director of Operations, Director of Education as well as an advisor on First Nations Governance, Flood Compensation and Senior Advisor to the Chief and Council. He also served as a Magistrate in and for the Province of Manitoba from 1982 to 1992. In 1996 to 2000, Robert served as an Alternate Dispute Resolution Negotiator for First Nation people and was registered with the ADR Institute of Canada Inc. and with the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Manitoba Inc. Robert is currently serving as a District Executive Member with the Manitoba and NW Ontario District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Robert received the Order of Manitoba in 2008 for his many contributions to First Nation communities and the Province of Manitoba. He was re-appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2009. Keith Thomas (Winnipeg Beach), Keith is the Risk Manager for the Manitoba Association of School Trustees, a position he has held for the past thirty-one years. During that time, he has served as a Director of the Canadian Risk Insurance Management Society (RIMS). Keith has been an active volunteer, serving as Chairman of Safe Grad Manitoba from 1980 to present as well as Chairman of Teens Against Drinking & Driving (TADD) from 1986 to present. He was recognized for his contributions by Canadian Youth Against Impaired Driving (CYAID) in 1998. Keith was re-appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2009. Ruby Tretiak (Gimli), Ruby spent thirty-four years working in the field of health care, which includes roles such as Public Health Nurse, Regional Continuing Care Coordinator and North East District Director from 1997 to 2008. Following her retirement in 2008, Ruby opened up the Water's Edge Bed & Breakfast at her Siglavik home outside of Gimli. As a longtime community volunteer, Ruby has been actively involved with the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Fringe Festival, International HOPE, the Gimli District Health Auxiliary, the Westshore Singers and the Gimli Handbell Choir to name just a few. She has also been a volunteer "cabin mom" at Camp Stepping Stones since its establishment in 2005. Ruby is a Licensed Marriage Commissioner and was appointed to the Interlake RHA Board on April 1, 2009. Diane Woychyshyn (Arborg), Diane served for twenty-nine years as admin/senior staff at St. Benedicts Manor and then at Arborg & Districts Health Centre. During that time, she also held the role of Ambulance Coordinator until her retirement. As a volunteer, Diane spent ten years as a member of the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and has served twelve years on council for the R.M. of Armstrong. Other volunteer activities include Chair of Riverdale Homes in Arborg, Chair of the Arborg Literacy Program and one year with the Association of Registered Nurses.
