Lungs are for Life
Lungs Are For Life is The Lung Association’s school program for smoking prevention. It has been developed especially for students – from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
Lungs Are For Life is designed to stop children from ever picking up and trying to smoke their first cigarette. Lungs Are for Life also provides help to students who smoke and are trying to quit. The program tries to influence and encourage students to explore their own ideas about smoking and to make decisions with facts, not peer pressure.
Building a foundation in the primary grades gives students a head start in developing the awareness and attitude needed to shape a healthy lifestyle. It is vital to help children in primary grades develop the skills they’ll need to stay smoke-free all their lives.
The Lungs Are For Life program can be taught at any time during the year. You may want to teach Lungs Are For Life during National Non-Smoking Week (third week in January). Otherwise, it is recommended that you teach Lungs Are For Life as one of the last components in the HPE curriculum – this leaves your students ready to practice new refusal skills during their summer break.
