REGIONAL HEALTH AUTHORITIES RESPONSIBILITIES

The Interlake Regional Health Authority is responsible for the operation and administration of facility and community based health programs and services at a regional level within the Interlake region of Manitoba. The Interlake RHA is responsible within the context of broad provincial policy direction, for assessing and prioritizing those services and programs based on evidence based needs and developing and managing an integrated approach to health care delivery.

The Regional Health Authorities Act legislation came into force on April 1, 1997. It sets out the conditions under which the RHA's are incorporated, as well as defining duties and responsibilities of the Regional Health Authorities, for ensuring effective health planning and delivery.

THE INTERLAKE REGION

The Interlake Region is an expansive geographical area encompassing approximately 26,000 square kilometers, reaching from the R.M. of Rosser at the north perimeter highway of the City of Winnipeg to the 53rd parallel and stretching between Lake Manitoba on the west and Lake Winnipeg on the east. In addition, our region includes a narrow strip of land on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, extending up to Grand Marais.

The Interlake Region includes a wide variety of geographical features, such as lush agricultural lands, densely treed and rugged areas along with endless beaches. Within our region, there are twenty-one rural municipalities, nine First Nation communities and a large area that is defined as unorganized territories, which tends to be largely unpopulated.

The North East District consists of the rural municipalities of Bifrost, Dunnottar, Fisher and Gimli, the incorporated towns and villages of Arborg, Gimli, Winnipeg Beach and Riverton, and the First Nation communities of Fisher River, Jackhead and Peguis, in addition to a large northern unorganized territory. Also, the portion of the RM of Armstrong from Narcisse north and from highway #7 east lies within the North East District. The North West District consists of the rural municipalities of Coldwell, Eriksdale, Grahamdale, Siglunes and St. Laurent and the First Nation communities of Dauphin River, Fairford, Lake Manitoba, Lake St. Martin and Little Saskatchewan, in addition to a large northern unorganized territory.

The South East District consists of the rural municipalities of St. Andrews and St. Clements, the City of Selkirk and the First Nation communities of Brokenhead. The South West District consists of the rural municipalities of Rosser, Woodlands, Rockwood and Armstrong (south of Narcisse and west of highway #7) and the Town of Stonewall and the Village of Teulon. The district is located fairly close to the City of Winnipeg with the RM of Rosser extending within the perimeter highway. Many of the communities within the district have become "bedroom communities" to the City of Winnipeg.
